The Las Cruces Police Department, in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, is hosting an event that's quite the catch for kids and adults who fancy fishing. The "Fish with a Cop" event, scheduled for June 7 at Young Park pond, invites community members of all ages and skill levels to a morning filled with fishing, food, and friendly competition. According to the City of Las Cruces, the festivities will kick off at 8 a.m. and continue until noon.
If you're worried about not having the gear, don't sweat it, the organizers have got you covered with equipment and will teach you how to cast a line, so no prior experience with a rod and reel is necessary, plus there will be food and live music to enjoy, and skill stations set up for all to try their hand at improving their angling abilities. Prizes are set to be awarded in various categories, which promises to add a hint of competition to the camaraderie. Young Park pond, located at 1905 Nevada Ave, is the place to be on that Saturday morning, and while participation is free and open to all, it's first-come-first-served, so best to plan to get there early.
The event is not just a chance to fish. It's an opportunity for positive community interactions with law enforcement officials; participants can be paired with officers or professional anglers who will guide them through the basics of fishing. Parents and guardians are encouraged to accompany the youngsters, making it an ideal family outing. The generous sponsor list includes a mix of local police departments, such as New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, and New Mexico State University Police, alongside community businesses like Matteo’s Authentic Mexican Food and Walmart.
