Outdoor shooting enthusiasts will have a chance to sharpen their aim and learn some new skills at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range's 2025 open house in Salt Lake City. Scheduled for June 14, the event promises a day packed with activities suitable for both seasoned shooters and novices. The range, located at 6000 W. 2100 South, is the solitary outdoor shooting range in the Salt Lake Valley and is operated by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, range manager Blanche Smith expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming open house. "We really enjoy the members of the public who visit, as well as our volunteers and staff who help run the ranges," Smith said. "I love introducing people to target shooting and seeing their faces light up when they hit a target for the first time." The event, which coincides with Father’s Day weekend, could provide an engaging outing for families, and particularly those wanting to celebrate with their dads.

The open house will invite visitors to experience various shooting disciplines for free, including handgun, rifle, and archery ranges. Those interested in shotgun shooting will have the option to purchase a discounted round of trap, skeet, or five-stand shooting. Events on the day will feature a .22 rifle marksmanship and spinner course, muzzleloader demonstrations, and clinics on topics like duck decoy placement strategies. Furthermore, attendees can witness dog training demonstrations and participate in a mini-archery challenge.

As detailed by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the facility boasts a range of amenities including 100-, 200-, and 300-yard rifle ranges, multiple lanes for handgun and rimfire use, and an archery range with lanes from 20-90 yards. Not only focused on shooting, the site also offers a bird-watching area and a 934-acre dog training space within the Lee Kay Wildlife Management Area – though it now requires a valid Utah hunting, fishing, or combination license for access.

It's recommended that participants register on Eventbrite in advance to secure their spot, keeping in mind that youth under 16 must attend with an adult. The range typically operates from Wednesdays through Sundays with varying hours, so it’s wise to confirm availability before visiting on non-event days. Regular admission fees apply outside of the open house event, with adult passes at $6 and youth passes at $3.
