A deadly shooting in Port St. Lucie left one man dead and another in custody, which unfolded yesterday in broad daylight. According to police, the incident occurred near Southeast Bolton Avenue and Southeast Delano Road and involved a confrontation between individuals who were known to each other.
As reported by CBS12, officers arrived on scene during the active shooting situation to find a victim lying on the ground with gunshot wounds and the suspect actively discharging a firearm. "The officers weren’t close enough to tell who he [suspect] was firing at, at that point. Whether he’s firing in the air, at officers, or somebody else, we’re not clear yet," Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk disclosed, suggesting the immediate uncertainty of the suspect's target.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody without further incident. Medical responders rushed the victim to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Details about either individual involved have yet to be released.
"It appeared to start inside a home between the suspect and two roommates," Chief Niemczyk revealed in an interview obtained by WPBF, indicating the violence spilled from a personal domestic conflict into the public view on the street. The specifics of the interpersonal dynamics that led to the shooting are still under investigation, while a third person, presumably one of the roommates, is being questioned by the authorities.
Niemczyk confirmed that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Past police calls to the residence involved in the incident were mentioned, though no clarity was provided on the context of those prior interactions. Meanwhile, the status of charges against the suspect remains pending as the investigation continues. According to officials, apart from the fatality and the suspect’s arrest, no other injuries were reported in connection with the shooting.
