Chicago's Austin neighborhood is stepping into a brighter future with the completion of a significant streetscape renovation dubbed "Soul City West." This $8.7 million project, unveiled by Mayor Brandon Johnson alongside the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), transforms Chicago Avenue between Austin Boulevard and Central Avenue into a more pedestrian-friendly and aesthetically pleasing space. Mayor Johnson noted the project's alignment with community-driven redevelopment, stating, "The Soul City Corridor is becoming a reflection of the Austin community’s pride and potential," as reported by the City of Chicago.
Upgrades range from broader sidewalks adorned with natural parkway pavers to high-visibility crosswalks and safer bike lanes. Not just functional, the improvements were shaped to directly address community concerns, such as the need to slow down traffic and enhance the area's aesthetics. According to the City of Chicago, the project is intended for "delivering traffic safety improvements, upgrading aging infrastructure, and creating a vibrant, welcoming corridor."
Along with infrastructure, the streetscape introduces Peace Circles, a community-focused element offering gathering spaces designed with local youth input in partnership with Territory, a youth-centric design organization. In a statement obtained by the press, Malcolm Crawford, Executive Director of the Austin African American Business Networking Association, poignantly summed up the larger implications: "This project means hope, it means investing in our businesses, our community and our future," as per the City of Chicago.
