The City of Minnetonka has awarded its 2025 Sustainable Minnetonka Awards, recognizing local efforts to bolster sustainability in the area, reported the city's official website. In the April 21 city council meeting, seven awards were handed out across various categories, including energy, waste reduction, landscape, water, and youth engagement.
Among the business recipients, Engineered Products Co stood out with significant upgrades to their facility including a solar panel installation, EV charging station, and energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, transitioning to nearly net-zero energy use; resident Dennis Bauchwitz played a pivotal role at Applewood Pointe Senior Cooperative, navigating a shift to solar power through a partnership with Pure Sky Energy, these winners signaling a drive towards renewable energy solutions within the community. Laursen Piano Service and Michael Stern were respectively acknowledged for their contributions in waste reduction, the former by upcycling irreparable pianos into art and the latter by salvaging and repurposing vast amounts of materials during home reconstruction with assistance from Better Futures.
Turning to biodiversity and conservation efforts, Ann Woodson Hicks has dedicated over a decade to creating a pollinator-friendly environment by integrating native plants into her landscape, a move that also aids in monarch butterfly preservation through milkweed seed distribution. The Clarion Hills Association was similarly lauded for its work in planting a diversified shoreline buffer to combat erosion and invasive species, enhancing the natural integrity of their local waterways.
Youth engagement was spotlighted with the Vantage Program - Water Equity Team, a group of four students commended for their research and advocacy on water equity challenges facing marginalized communities, an initiative emphasized during a presentation to the League of Women Voters; besides the winners, Alcott Apartments, Amira Minnetonka, 701 Carlson, Nick Lambertz, and Sharon Finney were commended for their green initiatives with each honored attendee receiving a plaque created from local ash trees milled by city staff, a poignant tribute to sustainable practices in the face of environmental adversity.
