Early Monday morning, chaos unraveled on the East Bank where a 42-year-old woman became an unintended victim of gunfire. According to Nashville.gov, she was inside her tent when the night was ruptured by the sound of an argument across the river, and subsequently, gunshots. One of those bullets found its way through the fabric of her tent, striking her in both hands.
Responding officers from the Non-Lethal Shooting Unit discovered a bullet hole puncturing the tent, and within its confines, they retrieved a projectile. Their investigation then led them across the river to 1st Avenue North and Broadway, where two nine-millimeter casings were found near the steps by the riverbank. Descriptions of the scene are punctuated by a witness account who allegedly dove into a tussle between two groups. He mentioned a handgun and, after a physical altercation, he walked away. But the night was soon peppered with what he believed to be shots fired, prompting him to seek help, and a call to 911 followed at 4:25 a.m.
The victim, currently recovering at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, described to detectives the terrifying moments of the incident. She reported that she was inside her tent with her boyfriend when she heard men arguing across the river about a gun and heard gunshots
Detectives are now on the hunt for individuals connected to the incident and have released photos of those wanted for questioning. They encourage anyone with recognition of these faces to step forward.
