
North Miami kicks off Haitian Heritage Month this May with "Nou La! Haitian Footprints in America," a series of events honoring the Haitian-American community's rich cultural contributions. The City of North Miami provides a full slate of activities, including art exhibitions, culinary workshops, dance classes, and literature readings, showcasing the diverse and vibrant culture of the city's significant Haitian-American population.
Opening the month's celebrations today, MOCA Plaza will host an exhibition tour of Vickie Pierre's work before diving into a panel discussion spotlighting the contributions by Haitians to the United States, as detailed on the City's official website. Residents can immerse themselves in Haitian heritage through hands-on art workshops for kids courtesy MOCA Mini Makers followed, by Sunday Stories to share Haitian culture and history, with engaging activities and a captivating reading of "Haiti A to Z."
A variety of events will cater to diverse interests throughout the month, like the Ti Moso Lakay cooking class teaching traditional Haitian dishes and the Folkloric Dance Classes providing attendees with an authentic cultural dance experience to the rhythm of live drumming. Guests can also attend NoMi Beats & Bingo Jwet Night for a relaxed evening filled with music and games and join the Haitian Entrepreneurship Luncheon to empower local Haitian business minds.
One of the unique offerings includes Pedale 1804, an 18.04-mile bike ride winding through the cities on May 18 that showcases Haitian American landmarks followed by the Wellness Oasis at MOCA Plaza, these events require prior registration. Cinema buffs can enjoy Haitian films at the Cinema Past, Present, & Future screening, and mothers will be honored at a special Ti Kado Brunch and Haitian Mother's Day celebration at Griffing Community Center.
The celebratory month will come to a close with Jazz At MOCA featuring jazz artist Mushy Widmaier, and the official Closing Ceremony will sum up the festivities on May 31 with music, reflections, and unity.
