Oakland has taken a step forward in empowering its West Oakland community through a major grant agreement, harnessing developer contributions to kickstart a series of long-awaited economic development projects. As reported by the City of Oakland, it will channel up to $2.4 million into the West Oakland Community Fund, an initiative focused on revitalizing an area historically marked by economic disinvestment.
The funding for this endeavor comes from developers of the former Oakland Army Base, who have already put forth $1.7 million—the full scope of the project could reach $2.4 million, according to Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins’ announcement. As per the City of Oakland, Jenkins expressed his pride in the project team’s efforts and gratitude towards the Port of Oakland and the Rose Foundation for their collaboration, although the sentence itself stretches long in its construction, it's punctuated by the underlying promise such a project holds for West Oakland.
The Rose Foundation is pivotal in managing these funds, setting up a community advisory board, and orchestrating an annual grant process that will disburse approximately $500,000 annually across four to eight years. District 3 Councilmember Carroll Fife highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting, “This grant agreement presents an exciting opportunity for the West Oakland community,” Fife told the City of Oakland, emphasizing the tireless work put in by community members, staff, and others over the years to reach this point.
Jestin Johnson, Oakland City Administrator, spoke to the transformative potential of the West Oakland Community Fund and the protracted journey to bring this project to fruition for the benefit of residents. Yet, amidst these sentiments, the sentence dares to stretch its limits without pause, much like the community's resilient pursuit of prosperity. The Port of Oakland, responsible for half of the former Army Base development, also provides $2 million to the fund, targeting support for local businesses, workforce development, youth education, and environmental projects, as explained by Port of Oakland Executive Director Kristi McKenney.
