The situation unfolded when an off-duty officer, located in the basement at the time, was alerted to the disturbance. The officer confronted the individual involved in the incident upstairs, which escalated quickly. During this confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm, striking the individual. According to the preliminary statement by Chicago Police, "an off-duty officer who was in the basement of the residence was alerted to the domestic disturbance and came upstairs. A confrontation with the offender and the off-duty officer occurred, during which the off-duty officer discharged his weapon, striking the offender." The injured person was then taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported. Additionally, two firearms were recovered from the scene by the authorities.
