A late-night blaze at a Fort Pierce apartment complex has upended the lives of 33 residents, calling forth aid from the Red Cross to address immediate needs. The fire, which began last night, engulfed four of the twelve units in the Weatherbee Pines apartment complex, as reported by CBS12, prompting firefighters from the St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) to rush to the scene at approximately 11:38 p.m. on Weatherbee Road.
The firefighting teams, arriving swiftly as desperate moments ticked away, extinguished the flames in about an hour. Although they extinguished it in that span, the entirety of the complex suffered from a necessary power shutdown. According to officials, this measure left all residents without a home. WFLX highlights that volunteer members from the Palm Beach Treasure Coast Chapter's Disaster Action Team coordinated by the Red Cross are stepping in to provide support for displaced individuals, including several children, with emergency financial assistance, among other services.
No physical injuries have been reported among the evacuated residents. In the immediate aftermath, the local American Red Cross has been a beacon, coordinating aid for those affected and ensuring that 25 individuals have a semblance of support as they face sudden homelessness. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no official reason has been shared with the public.
