A San Diego man has been sentenced to seven years to life in prison for an attack on an elderly trolley rider. The assailant, Israel Valdivia, 27, was convicted on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to a news release by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. Valdivia's act was deemed particularly brutal as it involved a vulnerable 71-year-old man, identified as Jose Serra, who was assaulted upon exiting a trolley on his way to work.
The incident, which occurred early in the morning, left the senior severely injured with multiple stab wounds and a nearly severed ear. District Attorney Summer Stephan characterized the attack as "vicious, unprovoked" and condemned the violence within the public transport system. "Today’s sentence brings to measure justice to the victim and to the community at large," Stephan stated, as detailed in the official press release. The DA further asserted, "We will not tolerate senseless assaults in our trolley system or anywhere."
Reports indicate that Valdivia attacked Serra with an 11 to 13-inch knife and proceeded to brutally kick him before fleeing the scene. The assailant managed to elude capture temporarily but was later apprehended in Texas and extradited back to San Diego to face his charges. Serra, the victim of this ruthless attack, was simply beginning his day, and the trial has highlighted the random nature of this violent crime within the seemingly safe confines of the city's transit system.
This conviction comes in the wake of similar incidents on San Diego's public transportation. Last year, Angelina Montes Stricklen received a 13-year sentence for stabbing a sleeping young man on the Blue Line Trolley in La Jolla. In another case reported in 2023, Ryan Rukstelis was sentenced to 15 years to life after he fatally pushed a 68-year-old man into a moving freight train. Deputy District Attorney Mei Owen successfully prosecuted Valdivia's case, emphasizing the judicial system's ongoing commitment to vigorously punish those who commit violent crimes against the public.
