Monroe County was hit hard by a series of storms yesterday night, leaving at least five individuals injured and causing damage to over 75 homes. According to the FOX59 report, a 96-year-old man was among those injured, sustaining a head injury deemed non life-threatening by authorities. The Ranchero Motel and the Clear Creek Post Office also suffered "significant damage" in the storms, according to police statements.
First responders assessed the widespread property damage, which traversed across western and southern Monroe County, including but not restricted to roads such as State Road 45 and Stanford Road. Standing signs were put up to restrict traffic after the storm by responders, as detailed in a WTHR report. Roads were made impassable by the downed trees and power lines, compounding the efforts to navigate through the debris.
In addition to the homes, the storm impacted several commercial structures, including the 30-unit Ranchero Motel and eight duplexes on a nearby private drive. The Clear Creek Post Office on South Rogers Street was also hit, experiencing severe damage. Emergency personnel, including the Sheriff's Office and the Bloomington Police Department, were swiftly deployed to these sites, as documented by The Bloomingtonian.
The American Red Cross has stepped in to offer assistance and shelter to those affected. Information acquired by FOX59 indicates that Sherwood Oaks Christian Church is operating as a shelter location for storm victims. Essential personal items such as prescription medications and hygiene supplies are encouraged for those seeking refuge. As the community grapples with the aftermath, the Red Cross has urged individuals needing help to reach out at 1-800-RED CROSS.
