A week and some days following the fatal shooting of a Georgia Tech student in Midtown Atlanta, a suspect has surrendered to authorities. Nigel Belser, a 21-year-old man, is now in custody after turning himself into the Fulton County Jail last Sunday, as FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Belser faces charges that include murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The tragic incident occurred on May 18 at The Connector Apartments, located at the intersection of Spring Street and Third Street. Akash Banerjee, the 23-year-old victim and Georgia Tech student, suffered a fatal gunshot to the head and was promptly transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries two days later. Despite video footage released by police potentially identifying Belser as the shooter, it had not been immediately clear if he was the individual depicted in those images. Atlanta police, meanwhile, are urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to get in contact with Atlanta Crime Stoppers, explicitly asking them to call 404-577-8477.
As per additional details fetched from WSB-TV, the altercation that preceded the shooting allegedly stemmed from an argument between Belser and Banerjee at the apartment complex. However, the specific motive behind the altercation, and how exactly the two men were acquainted, has yet to unravel.
Legal representation for Belser remains unconfirmed, and details concerning his court appearance have not yet been disclosed. Eyewitness accounts, forensic evidence, and any additional information that surfaces will be critical as this case progresses through the jurisdiction of Fulton County.
