A deadly multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 near Calhoun early Tuesday morning left three people dead and several others injured. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the crash involved a northbound tractor-trailer initially colliding with a Hyundai Sonata. The events that unfurled thereafter were catastrophic, with the tractor-trailer losing control, crossing the median into southbound lanes, and impacting two other tractor-trailers as well as two passenger vehicles – one of which, a Ford Ranger, caught fire.
An initial investigation by the Georgia State Patrol, as noted in Local 3 News, has yet to ascertain what precipitated the initial collision. The interstate was a tableau of chaos, with six vehicles ensnared in wreckage, prompting a complete closure of all southbound lanes to facilitate emergency response and subsequent investigations.
"It can happen to anybody at any time," a motorist said, ensnared in the resultant jam for over two hours, in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. Following the incident, the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team has been commissioned to thoroughly investigate and piece together the full narrative of this tragedy.
The aftermath of the crash saw an extended closure of the southbound lanes of I-75, causing significant delays and an outpouring of concern from the community. By 11 a.m., traffic flow was partially restored, with two lefthand lanes on I-75 Southbound reopened and an anticipated full reopening by 1:00pm, according to Local 3 News. Amidst recovery efforts, the dead have yet to be identified, awaiting notification of the next of kin.
A tragic crash on I-75 echoes a recent six-vehicle accident on the same stretch of road, highlighting the dangers of this busy interstate. Drivers are urged to stay alert and cautious.
