A Troup County government employee has been terminated amid a growing investigation into a payroll discrepancy first spotted late last month. This incident came to light last Tuesday, April 29, when the discrepancy was identified, prompting an internal review and engagements with outside authorities, as per county officials.
Following the internal investigation, which led to cooperation with the District Attorney's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a Payroll & Benefits Generalist was let go this past Wednesday. As FOX 5 Atlanta reports, the employee's name and specifics of the irregularity have not been disclosed to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
In the wake of the termination and initial probe, Troup County has committed to a full-scale review of their payroll system and internal controls. Interim measures are also being implemented to guard public monies and uphold the financial precision that the community expects.
"Troup County is committed to transparency and accountability," officials proclaimed in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. Meanwhile, as reported by WTVM, the county is ensuring continued financial accuracy and protection of the funds public through the additional safeguards put in place.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's involvement signals the gravity of the issue at hand, yet Troup County officials are standing firm in their pledge to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, while specifics remain closely held to ensure the process's efficacy.
