Urgent Warning Issued for Chicago Beachgoers After Military Flare Found at Montrose Beach

As Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of the summer season, a concerning discovery at Chicago's Montrose Beach has prompted urgent warnings from local officials. A potentially hazardous phosphorus flare, originating from a recent joint military exercise lake offshore from Milwaukee, was found by a lifeguard at the popular beach destination, according to CBS News Chicago. This discovery comes just as Chicago's beaches opened for the summer, welcoming residents to its sandy shores.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan reported that during an earlier military training with the Air Force, four phosphorus pyrotechnics failed to ignite upon water impact, remaining armed. One of these pyrotechnics was luckily retrieved at Montrose Beach, but three others remain at large, possibly within the vicinity of Chicago's lakeside recreational spots. The flares, which could produce intense heat and red smoke, are dangerous if disturbed and should be avoided by the public. The Coast Guard strongly advises that if anyone spots a silver-colored cylinder on the beach, they are to immediately call 911.

The missing flares from the exercise are described as silver-shaped cylinders, capable of emitting a flame that reaches a scorching 2,900 degrees Fahrenheit, states ABC 7 Chicago. Montrose Beach, known for its family-friendly environment and a native bird habitat, now finds itself under an unexpected shadow of potential danger amidst usual summer festivities.

With ongoing efforts to locate the remaining flares, authorities are heightening awareness to ensure public safety. Montrose Beach, particularly recognized for its dog-friendly areas and the piping plovers, a protected bird species that nested there recently, is an area of significant focus and concern. Community members and beachgoers are reminded again to practice caution and refrain from handling any unusual objects. Instead, should such a suspicious item be encountered, they are to keep a safe distance and promptly notify the authorities.
