If you typically access the westbound Loop 101 via the 35th Avenue on-ramp, please be advised that this ramp has been closed as of 11:30 p.m. yesterday for approximately 60 days. According to the ADOT, the closure is due to a major reconstruction project. Drivers are encouraged to identify alternative routes for their daily commutes during this period.
The closure is a piece of a larger, $140 million endeavor to widen the freeway west of Interstate 17. While the 35th Avenue on-ramp is expected to reopen in mid-July, the entire project isn't slated for completion until spring 2027. In the meanwhile, motorists may consider using on-ramps at 27th or 51st avenues as a detour. The overall goal is to increase traffic flow and safety by adding one lane in each direction and updating the infrastructure, including bridges and lighting, as well as laying down new pavement. More information on the project can be found at the ADOT website.
The funding of the project is rooted in transportation improvements approved by voters back in 2004, through Prop 400. It involves a half-cent countywide sales tax, reflecting the will of the people for more efficient and safer roadways. This undertaking is not just an ADOT project but a collaboration with the cities of Phoenix, Glendale, and Peoria, as well as the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), the metropolitan planning organization for the greater Phoenix region.
