Yesterday morning, a woman was hospitalized after being shot during an altercation near Midtown Atlanta's MARTA station. The Atlanta Police, responding to a shooting at 41 10th Street NE around 1 a.m., found a 25-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound, as FOX 5 Atlanta reported. The injured woman was reported to be alert, conscious, and breathing at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital.
A possible suspect was detained shortly after the incident by MARTA Police near the scene. The altercation, according to the Atlanta Police, likely began as a verbal dispute between individuals who knew each other before escalating. What remains unclear is whether the wounded woman was the intended target or an unintended victim of the gunfire.
The suspect's identity has not yet been released as the investigation into the shooting continues. According to reports from Atlanta News First, this shooting is part of a worrying trend of violence at MARTA stations, with robberies up by 48% and aggravated assaults increasing by 60% last year.
Yesterday incident was not an isolated event, with Atlanta Police responding to shootings at two other locations overnight around the same time. One individual was shot in the thumb at The Avery apartment complex, while another victim was shot multiple times at a convenience store on Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy. NW. None of the suspects in these additional incidents have been arrested as of yet.
Investigators from both the Atlanta Police and MARTA Police continue to work together, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine the cause of the escalation to gunfire. The authorities emphasize that details may change as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
