The skies just got a bit more connected between Miami and the Eternal City. American Airlines has kicked off a new direct flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Rome's Fiumicino Airport (FCO), making the Italian capital more accessible for Miamians and further solidifying MIA's status as a gateway to the globe. An event complete with Italian cuisine and entertainment marked the occasion for this new service that aligns with American's largest summer schedule roll-out at MIA to date.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava celebrated the launch, saying, "American Airlines has been an essential driver of MIA’s global success, and with this bold expansion to Rome, they’re once again proving their commitment to our community, our economy, and our place on the world stage," according to Miami-Dade County's press release. She noted the new connection invites more international travelers to explore Miami-Dade and bolsters the county's global reputation.
This summer, American plans to operate more than 37,200 flights out of MIA between May 16 and September 2. It's a part of the airline's larger strategy that includes over 715,000 flights systemwide, equating to an ambitious five flights per minute. American will enhance service to several popular destinations like Chicago, Las Vegas, Montego Bay, Los Angeles, and New York. Significantly, MIA hosts 170 destinations with American Airlines providing exclusive service to 90 unique locales.
With Miami International Airport sitting as America's busiest hub for international freight and ranking second for international passenger traffic, it's poised for an ambitious $9 billion investment designed for capital improvements and infrastructure maintenance. The airport connects more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport and remains a cornerstone of economic prosperity for Miami-Dade County, with an impressive $118 billion in business revenue and attracting around 60 percent of all international visitation to Florida, annually.
For those needing accommodations such as accessible format materials, Sign Language Interpreters, or CART services for Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) public events, reaching out well in advance is recommended. American Airlines' expansion at MIA, particularly with the Rome route, reconfirms the airline's and the airport's influential role in connecting communities and fostering economic growth in Miami and beyond.
