Early yesterday morning, Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) responded to reports of a blaze in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood, an incident now under active investigation for its "suspicious" origins. The fire took place in an apartment building near Southeast 118th and Holgate, where an empty apartment had recently been vacated, as KOIN reported.
Upon arrival, crews discovered active flames on both the first and second levels, and thick smoke billowing from the eaves and garage. Firefighters managed to suppress the fire successfully, ensuring no injuries were sustained, and the fire did not spread to neighboring buildings—thus preventing any residents from being displaced, KATU detailed the event. During the incident, a suspect was apprehended and detained by the Portland Police Bureau, only to be released later on.
Furthering the case, PF&R investigators have officially classified the incident as arson. Reports from the scene indicated a suspicious individual on the property at the time of the fire, leading to the brief arrest. No substantive leads followed the release of the suspect, as no one was injured in the conflagration and surrounding apartments remained unscathed. This information was corroborated in a statement obtained by KPTV, which confirmed the fire was deliberately set.
The authorities are now urging the public to come forward with any information related to the incident. While the individual initially detained has been released, the search for the arsonist continues. Portland Police and Fire departments are asking anyone with knowledge about the blaze, or who observed any unusual activity in the area prior to the fire, to report tips that could assist in the investigation.
