In a unanimous decision by a Fulton County jury, Atlanta father Rodney McWeay was found guilty on all charges, including the murder of his 4-year-old daughter, Treasure McWeay. Details of the case, as reported by FOX5 Atlanta, paint a harrowing picture of neglect and cruelty, culminating in the child's starvation death in December 2023. McWeay, who is 32, was also convicted of kidnapping and first-degree cruelty to children.
Upon McWeay's sentencing, he could be facing multiple life sentences as the weight of the verdict looms over the tragic death. Rejecting an earlier plea deal for a 75-year sentence, McWeay maintained his innocence throughout the trial. Despite found by police in a state of unresponsiveness and not alert or breathing on Dec. 11, 2023, as stated in reports from WSBTV, he pleaded 'not guilty' to all charges.
During the proceedings, the court was confronted with grim testimonies and evidence, with one pediatrician outlining alarming regressions in health and development among McWeay’s other children. As disclosed by FOX5 Atlanta, the court heard of a pediatrician’s testimony that described one of McWeay's sons showing "bruises consistent with being struck." Furthermore, "Any drop on the growth curve for a child is abnormal," the pediatrician asserted in testimony.
Adding to the bleak portrait described during trial was the description of Treasure's ultimate cause of death. Dr. Keely Iannelli, who examined the girl, told jurors that she died of "cardiac arrest caused by prolonged malnutrition," with the harrowing addition that "the heart is the last to go," according to her statement obtained by FOX5 Atlanta. A nurse recounted a moment at the hospital when one of the boys was eating so ravenously that he had to be restrained to prevent him from vomiting. She recounted saying, "He didn’t know when to stop."
McWeay's sentencing is slated for the next 30 days as per WSBTV's report, although no specific date has been provided.
