While some areas may enjoy a brief respite with sunny afternoons, the evening will steadily bring back that quintessential coastal cloud cover.
In their forecast, the NWS indicates that the marine layer will be slightly more compressed today, increasing the chances of coastal drizzle. The inland regions, however, will slowly warm up by late morning, with a high probability of breezy conditions along the clear-cloud cover interface. These varying microclimates present a challenge to accurately pin down the highs for this afternoon, which could range from the upper 50s to around 100 degrees in the farthest interior areas.
As for tonight, expect the marine layer to deepen and spread its tendrils farther inland, ensuring that even the more interior valleys aren't spared from the expansive blanket of cloud cover.
Looking ahead into the week, a "weak trough and low pressure is building into the region which will continue to deepen the marine layer and allow it to expand farther inland," as stated by the National Weather Service. This lingering pattern means coastal areas will likely be locked under stable temperatures and persistent overcast skies, with inland spots experiencing a cooling trend. Any spaces in between will inevitably be trading off between cloudy days with 60s on the thermometer and sunnier skies boasting 70s and 80s.
Regarding aviation specifics, the NWS points out that VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions will largely remain in place over the Bay Area for most of the day. However, as the night encroaches, so does the coastal stratus, promising a greater likelihood of IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) at Monterey Bay terminals after a brief clear-up in the afternoon.
