The Santa Clara County Parks announced that the elusive reptile, which was initially spotted at Joseph D. Grant County Park, has been captured safely. During a routine inspection near Grant Lake, staff members secured the lizard and, in collaboration with Santa Clara County Animal Services and California Department of Fish and Wildlife, ensured its transport. The tegu is under the care of Animal Services and is awaiting a potential reunion with its owner or a new adoptive home, as per the Santa Clara County Parks.
This capture provides some relief following earlier concerns. Hikers photographed and alerted park staff about the non-native reptile, urging authorities to exercise caution. With the potential to grow up to five feet in length, these tegus are known for their impact on local ecosystems, particularly as a threat to the eggs of ground-nesting birds and other wildlife.
According to Hoodline, the Santa Clara County Parks Department advised park visitors not to engage with the tegu but to report any sightings immediately by calling (408) 274-6121.
