The Chicago Police Department is setting up a DUI Saturation Patrol in the 6th (Gresham) District this weekend, it has announced. Starting from Friday at 6:00 p.m. and extending until 2:00 a.m. the following Saturday, the initiative is designed to combat impaired driving through increased monitoring of vehicular traffic.
During this time, officers will primarily focus on detecting signs of drivers under the influence, but also keep a vigilant eye on speed, alcohol-related offenses, and seatbelt compliance. The department will utilize police vehicles armed with speed detection technology to enforce the speeding laws. In a statement, it was clarified that the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit may also be dispatched, enabling officers to charge individuals with DUI offenses efficiently on site.
The mobile unit can issue Individual Recognizable Bonds (I-Bonds) at the scene, avoiding the need to transport suspects to a standard lockup facility for bonding. This process of using a BAT Mobile Unit expedites the handling of DUI cases within the patrol area.
Last weekend's DUI Saturation Patrol in the 14th (Shakespeare) District saw enforcement in action, though it did not result in any DUI arrests. The operation concluded with 44 citations in total, including 14 for unsafe vehicle violations, 4 insurance violations, and a number of other traffic-related offenses, according to data released by the police department. However, notable is the absence of citations for distracted driving and speeding, which points to a potential area of focus for future traffic enforcement initiatives.
