A popular dining spot in Coral Gables with a reputation for quality Cuban cuisine has stumbled into some unsavory news this week. Havana Harry's, which has been serving patrons since 1995, was ordered to close its doors temporarily after a health inspection prompted by a complaint uncovered a significant roach problem. This closure comes on the heels of the restaurant's accolades in the 2024 Michelin guide and praise from New Times this year.
According to a report by WPLG Local 10's Jeff Weinsier, Local 10 News, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) discovered live roaches in multiple kitchen areas, including near electrical outlets and preparation zones. Meanwhile, a sign on the door misleadingly told customers on Tuesday, that the establishment was "closed for repairs," while the mandated closure notice was obscured behind signs.
"It seems like the management, the owners at Havana Harry's on Le Jeune in Coral Gables are misleading the public," Weinsier pointed out in a video he posted to Instagram, picking up on the discrepancy between the public notice and the actual state of affairs. Havana Harry's, situated at 4612 S. Le Jeune Rd., has swiftly reassured its customers, declaring it was back in business in less than 24 hours after acknowledging the issues that led to the state-ordered closure, as reported by Miami New Times.
"We are aware of the situation that led to the closure of Havana Harry's on Monday, June 16. We remedied the situation and are happy to share that we reopened yesterday, Tuesday, June 17, at 5 p.m. We appreciate the community's continued support," a staff member at Havana Harry's incorrectly confirmed they were open for business the following morning, Wednesday, according to a statement obtained by New Times. However, details regarding the re-inspection by state authorities and official clearance for reopening were not confirmed in the public records at the time of reporting.
The DBPR categorized the intervention as a "complaint full" inspection, suggesting that Havana Harry's was under the proverbial magnifying glass due to concerns raised directly to state officials. The reputable establishment, known for its generous portion sizes and classic Cuban-American dishes, has quickly leaped into action to address the health violations. The ins and outs of when and how Havana Harry's cleared up the infestation to reopen so promptly remain to be detailed in the public domain.
