El Paso Community College (EPCC) teamed up with El Paso, Texas, Women Veterans to honor female service members during a Women Veterans Recognition Day Celebration at its Administrative Services Center. According to EPCC News, the event not only recognized veterans but also unveiled plans for a women-only VA Health Care Clinic in El Paso. Maria Gonzalez, founder and CEO of Texas Women Veterans, emphasized the progression of these plans, along with the upcoming veterans museum featuring a wing dedicated to women vets.

At the heart of the celebration, an all-women’s color guard from Bowie High School presented the flag, and EPCC Associate Vice President of Instruction and Student Success Dr. Paula Mitchell, who once served in the United States Army Nurse Corps, delivered a keynote speech. "We are paving the way for people, like our all-women Bowie Color Guard, to be the leaders of the future, so we are here today to recognize and honor those women," said EPCC Student Veterans Association President Chrystal Martinez, as per EPCC News.

The event also saw local women veterans presented with Trailblazer awards by representatives for United States Congresswoman Veronica Escobar and Congressman Tony Gonzales. Recognition was bestowed upon women like Jennifer Griffitt, an intelligence analyst for nine years, who also co-founded a women's empowerment group. Earning a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol and a certificate of recognition, it was presented to her by Robert Garza, Congressman Tony Gonzales' office regional director and veteran caseworker. Dr. Mitchell, reflecting on her journey and military heritage, stated, "For me, I joined in 1971. I was the only female in the registration office. The Vietnam war was still in progress. I was a junior in Nursing school. My father fought in World War II, both of my grandfathers in World War I, and my uncle was in the Air Force," as obtained by EPCC News.

Texas observes Women Veterans Day annually on June 12th, memorializing the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which was a historic milestone for female service members. This particular date was chosen to pay tribute to the women who have carried the country's spirit and defense forward, embodying the same resilience and commitment as their male counterparts in the armed forces. As noted in Dr. Mitchell's speech, this commemoration resonates deeply within the military community of Texas and the broader narrative of national service, reflecting upon the importance of "continuing advancing the role of women veterans in our community," as reported by EPCC News.
