A Fort Wayne neighborhood is reeling after an 11-year-old was stabbed by a suspect wearing a "Scream" mask on Thursday afternoon. The Fort Wayne Police Department reports that the attack occurred around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of West Colonial Avenue and South Anthony Boulevard. The child sustained a stab wound to the abdomen but, thankfully, is in non-life-threatening condition and receiving care at a local hospital, 21Alive News reported.
The assailant, identified as 27-year-old Trayveon Sewell, was apprehended by police following the incident. Sewell, who was dressed in the harrowing mask, adding an unsettling twist to the assault, was taken into custody in the 4500 block of Atwood Drive, which is situated east of the crime scene. He is currently facing charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a charge that is considered a Level 6 Felony, as noted by FOX59.
In the wake of the stabbing, the Fort Wayne Police Department has launched an investigation and is in the process of interviewing witnesses. In addition, authorities are seeking video footage from the area that may aid in the investigation. A spokesman from the department urged the public to come forward with any relevant footage or information, stating that anyone with such material should "contact the Fort Wayne Police Department at (260) 427-1201, Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-7867, or use the P3 Tips App," as detailed by 21Alive News.
Allen County prosecutors have formally charged Sewell with two felonies: battery of a person less than 14 when the defendant, is over 18 and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. These developments were reported by WTHR, which also indicated that Sewell's initial court hearing is set for Monday at 8 a.m. The tight-knit Fort Wayne community has been shaken by this act of violence, the relationship between the victim and the suspect remains unclear and a topic of much concern within the ongoing investigation.
