Emergency services, including the Fox Lake Police Department and the Fox Lake Fire Protection District, were initially tipped off after receiving messages that the individual was experiencing emotional distress and might seek solace in the bay's waters. WGN-TV reported that authorities had begun treating the operation as a recovery effort, following the ominous circumstantial evidence of the man's abandoned attire.
However, the narrative took a hopeful shift when the Fox Lake Police confirmed the missing man was located later that morning.
