A tragic incident occurred in Middle Georgia, where a one-year-old boy was killed after his mother, unknowingly, drove over him. Jones County Coroner Matthew Jarratt reported that the mother could not see the child as she pulled into the driveway since he was behind a bush and walked out in front of her car at the last second. The toddler, identified as Carson James Evans, was playing outside with his dad just before the accident happened, as detailed by FOX5 Atlanta.
According to 13WMAZ, the unfortunate event took place in Gray, Jones County. There are no charges being pressed as the incident was considered a complete accident. Jarratt confirmed to 13WMAZ that "there wasn't anything the mother could've done," citing the child's sudden move as the cause.
This fatal accident draws attention to a larger, often unspoken issue: front-over crashes. Kids and Car Safety, an organization tracking car accidents involving children, reports that 53 children under the age of 15 have been hurt or killed in Georgia frontover crashes since 1998. A frontover is defined as an incident where a child is hurt or killed by a vehicle moving forward slowly, often because the driver does not have a clear view of the child.
To actively try to prevent such heartbreaking occurrences, Kids and Car Safety chalks out three simple yet crucial guidelines: continuous supervision of children when a vehicle is in motion near them, use of strollers or holding toddlers in parking lots, and the installation of childproof covers and alarms on doors to alert adults if a child tries to leave the home. This preventive advice is spotlighted on FOX5 Atlanta.
In response to the need for compassionate reporting on traumatic events, the More Than A Number project was introduced and has since won recognition from Poynter-Stand Together. The initiative facilitates a less intrusive way for families dealing with tragedy to interact with journalists. It also provides an in-depth guide for the next steps for affected families. More Than A Number launched its streaming special in August, available on demand through 13WMAZ+, as mentioned by 13WMAZ.
