A Harris County mother is facing serious allegations after her two young children were reportedly found alone in their home, one brandishing an open bottle of wine. According to CW39, the mother, identified as Ebony Maddox, has been charged with two counts of child endangerment after a welfare check led police to the concerning scene. The report details how authorities were met by the 4-year-old at the door, who was seen with the wine.
Further investigation by deputies, sparked by concerns raised by the father of one of the children, revealed that the mother frequently left her 4 and 2-year-old children without supervision. The deputies found no adults present during their visit, as per coverage by ABC13. Maddox later contested this point in a phone conversation with deputies, claiming a friend had been tasked with watching the kids.
The case took an unusual turn when Maddox was confronted by ABC13 reporters. In a somewhat confounding exchange, "An open bottle of wine?" they asked, to which Maddox responded, "I don't recall that at all," and then proceeded to disclaim her identity stating, "I'm not even Ebony." When presented with a mugshot that matched her appearance, she denied, "This is not you?" with a flat "No," and continued by insisting she is a different woman named Nicole, who is childless.
As the case unfolds, Maddox is preparing for a court date set for Monday, where the details of the evening will likely be scrutinized. Meanwhile, Child Protective Services has placed the two children with their grandfather, who has confirmed his temporary custody of them, and is considering legal representation. "No, and I would never leave my kids home by themselves," Maddox added in defense to the allegations, making a paradoxical claim given the earlier identified childcare issues, as noted by ABC13. CPS also confirms it is investigating the case.
