The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds is partnering with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to offer children a free introduction to fishing on July 8 at 9:00 a.m. This hands-on event aims to reel in the young ones to the joys of fishing, and it's not just about the catch but also about nurturing patience and an appreciation for the great outdoors. "Fishing is a great sport that exposes kids to nature while teaching them the importance of patience and persistence," said Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, in a statement obtained by Illinois.gov. Participation is limited and requires pre-registration.

For interested participants, the first 25 eager kids to register will snag a spot. They'll be provided with fishing poles, bait, and basic instruction courtesy of IDNR. Note that while children under 16 don't need a fishing license, older fishers will have to wield a valid Illinois fishing license, which can be easily acquired online or through local vendors for $15. Exemptions apply to individuals who are blind or disabled, or those currently serving in the military. To register or for more details, the fairgrounds office is reachable at (618) 542-1511 during the workweek.

As for the day itself, participants are set to meet at 9:00 a.m. in front of the Expo Hall on the fairgrounds. Don't forget to bring sunscreen, bug repellent, drinking water, and a chair to ensure a comfortable fishing experience. But the opportunity to introduce your kids to fishing isn't the sole draw to the fairgrounds this summer.
