A fatal collision in Southwest Houston has led to charges against a 19-year-old man, who police say fled the scene after the crash. Isiah Martinez faces counts of failure to stop and render aid and driving while intoxicated, stemming from the incident that occurred on Wednesday evening in the 7600 block of Cook Road.

The Houston Police Vehicular Crimes Division reports that a gray Acura TL, driven by Martinez, was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed, when it struck a gray Nissan Maxima at the intersection. Tragically, an 11-month-old boy was ejected from the Nissan and pronounced dead at the scene. The mother of the child, aged 27, sustained minor injuries. Following the accident, Martinez and a passenger abandoned the vehicle and attempted to quickly flee on foot but were later apprehended by authorities.

Further investigation by the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division's Sergeant E. Fendia and D. Nguyen led to the discovery of Martinez's impairment at the time of the crash. According to a news release by the City of Houston, after being located, Martinez was convinced to return to the scene and was subsequently charged for his role in this fatal incident.

The identity of the young victim is still pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The investigation continues to look into the details of the tragic event.
