This past weekend, Indianapolis streets saw more than just the usual ebb and flow of traffic; they witnessed a concerted crackdown by law enforcement on reckless driving that resulted in multiple arrests and citations. According to a social media post by IMPD News, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and the Indiana State Police (ISP) issued dozens of citations, made several arrests, and towed numerous vehicles in response to dangerous driving behaviors like road racing and driving under the influence.
Friday night's activities began with a large influx of trucks and cars on the west side of the city, with some drivers exhibiting criminal conduct such as criminal recklessness, speed contests, and driving under the influence. The IMPD and ISP used the IMPD Grappler and an ISP Helicopter to intercept and halt these unlawful activities. In one incident from Friday night, a truck driver, Jason Hubbard, was arrested for criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and reckless driving after he was observed spinning near a group of pedestrians; Hubbard's vehicle was also towed.
Efforts to curb unsafe driving continued into the weekend. According to the IMPD News release, on Saturday, Zachary Nichols was apprehended for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after officers observed his truck speeding, causing a collision, and thereafter fleeing the scene. Nichols' breath alcohol concentration was reportedly double the legal limit.
The same weekend saw IMPD East District officers catching two Dodge Chargers and a Dodge Magnum racing on eastbound I70 at speeds topping 100 miles per hour. One of the drivers, Jaron Scott, was arrested for reckless driving and engaging in the speed contest, and his vehicle lacked the insurance was towed.
