State Rep. Brad Barrett (R-Richmond) recently announced that local students are among the recipients of this year's scholarship, designed to foster a new wave of qualified teachers in Indiana schools.
Nearing the scholarship's decade mark since its inception, the program has seen a record uptick in applicants this year. With a staggering 1,091 students vying for the opportunity, close to 300 scholarships were awarded, as per the details shared by the Indiana House Republicans. Amidst the chosen were Rebecca Rice from Centerville Sr High School; Kylar Marshall; Kaitlyn Wilson of Hagerstown Jr-Sr High School; and Lauren Lacey hailing from Northeastern High School.
"Students receiving this scholarship have earned it as they prepare for a career in education," Barrett asserted. These words underscore a commitment to not only the students' futures but also to the community that will, in time, benefit from their dedication to teaching. The scholarship offers a significant financial boon, presenting up to $10,000 per year, with a potential totality of $40,000 to each student dedicated to teaching in Indiana for a required span of five years post-graduation.
With an eye towards maintaining academic excellence, the scholarship stipulates stringent qualifications. Applicable students need to have graduated in the top 20 percent of their high school class, secured a place in the 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT, or maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, according to the official announcement.
