As the heat continues to bear down on central Indiana, the National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a heat advisory that will remain in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening. The advisory warns of heat index values rising up to 100 degrees and covers all of central Indiana. In taking these precautions, the National Weather Service advises the public to "drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors."
Scattered thunderstorms are on the horizon and, with the potential for strong wind gusts, small hail, and locally heavy rain, residents are advised to stay vigilant. According to a statement obtained by the National Weather Service, "Lightning is also a threat with any storm." While large scale spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, they encourage spotters to report any significant weather findings.
The hazardous weather conditions are not expected to relent soon, with daily chances of thunderstorms projected through early next week. Although these storms are mainly forecasted for the afternoon to early evening timeframes, an isolated strong to severe storm can't be ruled out on any given day. For more details on the weather forecast and upcoming conditions, residents can visit the National Weather Service's website.
Workers who must be outdoors during this advisory are pointed towards guidance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which recommends "scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments." Echoing the serious nature of the ongoing weather patterns, the National Weather Service Indianapolis reminds the public that "Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1."
