Drawing on the ruling of the Court of Appeals of Indiana, according to a statement obtained by the Events.in.gov, the court has affirmed Johnson's 87-year sentence after finding the evidence sufficient despite his appeals to the contrary.
In the wake of these horrifying crimes, Johnson's attempts to have his conviction overturned were met with firm resistance from the judiciary, his claims that three counts of Level 5 felony intimidation were unsupported by evidence, were rejected; likewise his sentence, which he argued was inappropriate, and the consecutive nature of his penalties for the attempted murder and rape charges, the court asserting the gravity of his predatory actions, which inflicted not only physical but also severe emotional trauma on his victims.
Attorney General Todd Rokita vocalized his approval of the Court's stance, highlighting the trauma inflicted upon "innocent Hoosier women" and praising the efforts of his team to secure justice. "This two-day crime spree caused immense harm to innocent Hoosier women and terrorized our community," Rokita stated in the press release, drawing attention to the broader impact of such heinous acts.
The Deputy Attorney General, Andrew Sweet, took a firm line on the ruling, underlining the state's commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring that predators face the consequences of their actions, saying, "Our office remains committed to protecting Hoosiers from violent crime and ensuring that those who prey on our communities face the full consequences of their actions" which sends a "clear message that such egregious behavior will not be tolerated in Indiana" as it was captured by the official statement.
