Early Friday morning, a well-being check took a fatal turn when Highland Park police officers shot and killed a man reported to be armed with a knife, as per information from Chicago Sun-Times. The incident occurred around 4:55 a.m. on the 900 block of Half Day Road, where police found the man in the roadway.
The situation rapidly escalated when the man allegedly "quickly charged at officers with a knife," prompting them to fatally shoot him, according to the report by CBS News Chicago. Responding to the distressing scene, the Highland Park Fire Department arrived shortly afterwards, attempting to administer life-saving measures which unfortunately did not succeed; the man died on site.
Following the shooting, a stretch of Half Day Road between Compton and Greenway avenues was closed to allow for a thorough investigation. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force has taken the lead on this case, investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Residents in the area were faced with road closures and the echoes of the early morning incident.
As part of the ongoing inquiry into the shooting, the area is to remain closed between Western and Compton avenues, with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force conducting an independent investigation into the officers' use of force.
