A tragic incident has rocked a Miami neighborhood after a pedestrian was killed and others injured in a violent crash involving multiple vehicles. NBC Miami reports that 36-year-old Andres Fiallo Estupinan is facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash causing death and serious bodily injury after the yesterday's evening crash that also resulted in an injured woman and damaged vehicles.
Detailing the harrowing event, law enforcement stated that the incident occurred near the intersection of 21st Avenue and 19th Street near Shenandoah Park; Fiallo Estupinan was allegedly speeding in a Volkswagen Passat when he "struck the pedestrian/victim from behind... causing him to go airborne while severing both of his legs," this according to the arrest report obtained by NBC Miami. After impacting the pedestrian, Estupinan's vehicle collided with an ice cream truck which then crashed into a parked Toyota, and he also struck a parked white Mercedes-Benz, all while making no visible attempt to brake and avoid the collision.
The pedestrian, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials state. The sequence of collisions ended with Fiallo Estupinan attempting to flee to Shenandoah Park and was stopped by bystanders who detained him until police arrived, Local 10 reports. Both Fiallo Estupinan and the occupant of the ice cream truck were taken to the hospital with significant injuries, including a fractured ankle and a skull fracture, respectively.
Residents have expressed deep concern and frustration over persistent speeding issues in the area; "This is horrible. This is a neighborhood. We’ve got kids everywhere," one neighbor told NBC Miami, emphasizing that speeding is a problem at all hours, not just during school or daylight hours, indicating a consistent disregard for pedestrian safety and local traffic laws. Denise Galves Torros, a resident, discussed potential solutions with Local 10, saying, “It’s very sad and totally preventable,” suggesting traffic calming measures like speed tables or traffic circles to improve safety.
As the police investigation continues, with vehicle search warrants pending and Fiallo Estupinan's eventual transfer to jail on hold due to hospitalization.
