In Murfreesboro, technology is proving to be a vital ally in the fight against crime. The city's Police Department's Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) has been credited with the swift arrests of three suspects in connection with a drive-by shooting that endangered the lives of several residents. According to a report from the Murfreesboro Police Department's official website, this incident occurred near the Abbington Apartments on Bradyville Pike, where shots were fired from a blue Volkswagen sedan last Sunday morning.
The response to the gunfire was immediate, with gunshot detection sensors triggering alerts to officers at 10:05 AM. Despite the harrowing event where bullets struck two apartments, police confirmed there were no injuries inflicted upon the residents inside, a fortunate outcome in what could have easily devolved into tragedy. It was the RTCC crime data analysts, employing license plate reader technology, who pinpointed the Volkswagen's registered owner, thus directing officers to the suspects' location at the Chariot Pointe Apartments on E. Northfield Boulevard.
Upon arrival, officers encountered three individuals, two teens and 20-year-old Kevin Hatter, leaning leisurely against the vehicle. After detaining Hatter and one of the teens, the second teen led officers on a brief foot chase before his capture, as mentioned by the Murfreesboro Police Department. Hatter is now facing multiple charges, including four counts of reckless endangerment, vandalism, and possession of an altered tag. The two teenagers, both 16 years of age, are dealing with separate legal repercussions for their involvement.
As Hatter resides in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, the weight of a $63,500 bond holds him until a hearing scheduled for September 8. The juveniles had a different journey, initially taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center, they have since been released.
