A recent report from the Nashville Police Department has put a spotlight on the rising issue of firearms theft, particularly from vehicles. According to the report, this year alone has seen a significant surge in stolen firearms, with 403 guns reported stolen from vehicles out of a total of 549 in Davidson County. This shows an alarming 73% of stolen guns are snatched from autos.
These numbers are not just abstract statistics; they represent a startling hike in thefts compared to last year, with the police department emphasizing the need for residents to lock up their cars. Last year, only 332 firearms were stolen from vehicles at this same juncture, marking a substantial increase. In the midst of the thefts, the MNPD had initiated a specialized effort to combat vehicle theft and other related crimes since February 2024, which led to 1,295 arrests and the recovery of 710 stolen vehicles along with 323 guns.
