In an effort to stoke the preparedness of Oregon's wildland firefighters, Governor Tina Kotek paid a visit to the closing day of the 2025 Mid-Willamette Valley Interagency Wildland Fire School. Joining forces with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), this year's event saw around 200 participants eager to learn and to practice how best to suppress and manage the blazes that threaten Oregon's forestry and communities. The Governor stressed the importance of statewide vigilance during fire season, urging the public to "stay alert, know the fire danger level where you are, and please follow all local fire restrictions." With fire season already in full swing, these specially trained individuals are bracing to work tirelessly, day and night, in situations most citizens would struggle to even imagine.
The weeklong training held in Sweet Home, OR, was not only an opportunity for new recruits to cut their teeth in fire management but also a moment to underscore the importance of safety. Participants were drilled extensively in the use of protective gear, the responsible handling of tools, and maintaining an acute awareness of potential hazards. "Firefighter safety is a core focus throughout the training," a statement from the Governor's Office affirmed.
