The community of Over-the-Rhine is in mourning following the tragic stabbing of local gym owner Patrick Heringer in his home. According to WCPO, Cincinnati police have arrested and charged Mordecia Black with murder and aggravated burglary. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has swiftly brought together the community in both grief and concern over rising crime rates. Kevin Hassey, president of the Over-the-Rhine Community Council, conveyed shock, remarking, "It's shocking that somebody in their bedroom, sound asleep at 4 o'clock in the morning, could get murdered."
Meanwhile, Sarah Heringer, the widow of the slain gym owner, openly condemned the city's handling of violent crimes. In a statement obtained by Cincinnati.com, she recounts the harrowing experience of seeing her husband bleed out and being treated as a suspect by police officers. "Traumatize the victims and treat them like suspects while criminals exploit your failure to lead," she read from a letter addressed to city officials.
Mrs. Heringer's poignant critique has served to deeply question not just the city's efforts to combat violence but also the support systems in place for victims of such tragedies. As noted by Local 12, the mayor and head of the local police union have been approached regarding her statement.
