Tragedy struck in Port St. Lucie as a leisurely ride ended in a fatal accident and subsequent arrests. According to CBS12, last Saturday evening, Cynthia Mackin was driving her golf cart with her husband, Daniel Mackin, when a sudden fall resulted in his death. The fall occurred at the intersection of SW Astor Creek Parkway and SW Shinnecock Drive, around 5:20 p.m.
Daniel was reportedly standing on the rear of the moving cart before losing his grip and striking his head against the sidewalk. He was urgently transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. As the incident unfolded, Cynthia Mackin faced a DUI check from the Port St. Lucie Police Department, revealing that she was under the influence at the time of the accident.
WPBF reported that Cynthia Mackin was charged with DUI, and was later released on a $500 bond from the St. Lucie County Jail. The tragedy deepened when, during the investigation, former Major League Baseball player Justis Morrison became involved in the situation.
Morrison attempted to interfere with the ongoing police investigation, as authorities instructed him to maintain a specific distance from the scene. Despite warnings, Morrison encroached within the designated perimeter and was subsequently arrested for obstruction, as he too bonded out on a $500 charge. The case, its anguishing detail of a husband's life lost and the frayed strands of the aftermath, is being reviewed further by the Traffic Homicide Investigators of the Port St. Lucie Police Department, who are in consultation with the State Attorney’s Office.
Authorities continue to implore any eyewitnesses or individuals with video evidence of the incident to come forward. They have provided contact lines at (772) 871-5001 or Treasure Coast Crimestoppers at (800) 273-8477, in hopes that additional information can illuminate this devastating event.
