The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued an air quality advisory for the Portland metro area effective today, citing increased ozone pollution levels, commonly called smog. As per the advisory on the Department of Environmental Quality's website, which is expected to last until 10 PM today, sensitive populations are warned of the potential health risks posed by the heightened pollutant levels.

Health officials have noted that children, pregnant individuals, older adults, and people suffering from heart disease or respiratory conditions might find the air quality unhealthy. It is recommended that outdoor activities be limited for these groups when pollution levels soar. Strangely enough, good air quality may be displayed by monitors in the morning hours, but can quickly deteriorate to unhealthy levels as the day progresses, peaking in the afternoon.

DEQ is encouraging actions to mitigate the effects of air pollution and curtail activities contributing to smog formation. Residents are urged to use public transportation, carpool, or find alternative methods of travel to reduce driving. Also, they suggest avoiding unnecessary engine idling, refueling vehicles during the cooler evening hours, and postponing gas-powered yard work equipment or paint and aerosol spray projects until the advisory is lifted.
