The construction of a new diverging diamond interchange has prompted the closure of State Route 18 near Interstate 90 in Snoqualmie, Washington, for a span exceeding five days, starting last Thursday. As reported by FOX 13 Seattle, the extensive work on this heavily trafficked junction will significantly disrupt local travel and has set detours into motion.
Commuters using I-90 are expected to experience sizable delays and navigational challenges due to the SR 18 closure. According to KOMO News, the designated detours may prove perplexing, involving looping maneuvers using exits along I-90. Authorities are urging drivers to factor in additional travel time or, if possible, to bypass the I-90/SR 18 interchange entirely to avoid the expected congestion.
Traffic on I-90 itself will not be affected by this closure. However, the scenario beneath the I-90 bridges is quite different, with no passing allowed in either direction of SR 18. KIRO 7 reports that drivers on the eastbound I-90 off-ramp can only turn south onto westbound SR 18, and those on the westbound off-ramp will only have access to northbound Snoqualmie Parkway or the westbound I-90 on-ramp, with no left turns onto SR 18 permitted for either direction.
Detours are marked for travelers: eastbound SR 18 traffic must take the eastbound I-90 on-ramp, and those heading south on Snoqualmie Parkway are directed to the westbound I-90 on-ramp. For those looking to navigate around the closure, exits to consider include Southeast North Bend Way (exit 27), Preston-Fall City (exit 22), and High Point Way (exit 20). The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has assured that signs will direct drivers on the detour paths, aiding in the mitigation of travel disruptions during this period of infrastructural enhancement.
