Last night, an officer with the Chicago Police Department lost her life in a shooting that took place in the city's South Side. The confrontation occurred in the 8200 block of S. Drexel Avenue after officers attempted to perform an investigatory stop on a male suspect, as detailed in a preliminary statement released by the police department.
According to the statement, the incident happened around 9:50 p.m. on Thursday. The suspect, when confronted by officers, fled on foot into a nearby building. Police pursued, leading to an altercation with an armed individual inside. During the engagement, one officer was shot and later pronounced dead at an area hospital, while another officer sustained an injury to the wrist and is in fair condition. The armed offender managed to escape the residence but was eventually apprehended.
The scene was secured, and investigators uncovered three firearms. The details surrounding the shooting remain sparse as the Investigative Response Team continues its work, and COPA — the Civilian Office of Police Accountability — has been notified and is presumably taking an active role in the oversight of this case.
