Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) detectives have been actively pursuing leads in the aftermath of two shooting incidents that rocked the city's downtown area, resulting in two arrests thus far, IMPD News reports. 18-year-old Cortez Starks and a 16-year-old male are facing weapons violation charges connected to these events, the former for unlawful carrying of a handgun and the latter for a similar offense compounded by his minor status.
This past Saturday, chaos ensued before the crack of dawn at around 3:30 a.m. when officers responded to multiple shots fired at Canal Walk, there they found three gunshot victims and a sprawl of evidence that included homes damaged by gunfire, an array of shell casings, and several firearms; officers detained multiple individuals. Yesterday, shots rang out again close to 2 a.m. near Monument Circle where three more individuals were met with bullets and officers quickly nabbed a young male with a firearm; all three victims from both incidents were left in stable condition following swift medical intervention.
The IMPD's Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) has been crucial in obtaining and reviewing surveillance video, enhancing detectives' ability to scrutinize the crime scenes. They were able to discern Starks's involvement quickly leading to his arrest although details of his connection to the shootings are still under investigation, per IMPD News.
Despite these arrests IMPD emphasizes both shootings are still open cases and their work continues as they aim to hold responsible parties to account; this is a sentiment shared by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office (MCPO) which will decide final charges, remember that those arrested are presumed innocent until proven otherwise. IMPD is extending a call to the public for more information, encouraging individuals to reach out to Detective Adam Ahmad or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers to aid in the ongoing investigation and bring further clarity to the incidents that have shaken downtown Indianapolis and have made Canal Walk and Monument Circle the epicenters of the city's burgeoning violence, the reports conclude.
