A boater suffering from an arm injury was saved off the coast of Marathon, Florida, by the U.S. Coast Guard, as confirmed in a recent report. The rescue took place approximately 70 miles southeast of Key West when a Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 helicopter crew was dispatched following a distress call.
The injured man was aboard a 100-foot supply vessel when the incident occurred. The Coast Guard Seventh District watchstanders initially received the report around 3:20 p.m., prompting a swift response. An airplane crew, already on patrol in the vicinity greatly aided in the rescue operation. According to a Coast Guard press release, the man was hoisted from the vessel and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for advanced treatment.
Lt. Cmdr. Josh Forteza, a MH-65 pilot and aircraft commander, highlighted the collaborative effort behind such missions. “This case highlighted the complex coordination and teamwork the U.S. Coast Guard employs to carry out dynamic missions,” Forteza said. “Diverting an airborne HC-144 aircraft crew allowed critical information to be relayed quickly to the MH-65 crew, enabling us to arrive on scene nearly 70 miles offshore, fully prepared to conduct the medevac of a critically ill patient,” as reported by Coast Guard press release.
Furthermore, the integration of efforts between the Coast Guard Seventh District watchstanders and hospital staff was crucial for a smooth handover of the patient. The Coast Guard emphasizes that such teamwork is essential for the success of time-sensitive operations like this one.
