An apartment fire on Indianapolis' far east side, at Spanish Oaks Apartments, forcibly dislodged 14 residents from their homes yesterday evening. According to FOX59, responding crews were dispatched around 5:47 p.m. to a complex located just off 38th Street near North German Church Road. Firefighters from the Indianapolis Fire Department and the Lawrence Fire Department swiftly banded together to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes.

The fire's incendiary fingers, which originated from unattended food on a stove, spread rapidly, consuming much in their path and ultimately damaging four apartments. Among those forced to seek alternative shelter were 11 adults and three children, as elucidated in reports from WISH-TV. The management of Spanish Oaks Apartments has reportedly secured shelter for the displaced residents.

In a related incident, on Friday night, the Indianapolis Fire Department had to swiftly act to rescue a family of four as flames took hold of an apartment building on the northwest side. Crews converged on the 4100 block of Mission Drive around 7:21 p.m., with additional support from the Speedway and Pike Township fire departments, following multiple 911 calls about the fire, per information shared by IFD on Facebook and detailed by CBS4 Indy.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames billowing from a vacant lower floor apartment, but their quick action allowed them to securely rescue a family trapped on a second-story balcony. IFD's fire investigators are digging into the possible role played by squatters in the vacant unit where the fire originated. Neighbors shared with IFD personnel that the unit was known to be frequented by squatters. As in the case of the fire at Spanish Oaks Apartments, those displaced are receiving assistance from IFD’s victims assistance unit in finding shelter, with the apartment complex’s management team actively involved in the process.
