Concerns have been raised after reports came to light regarding a passenger with an active case of measles traveling through Salt Lake City International Airport shortly before Memorial Day. Despite this health scare, Utah health officials decided against issuing an alert or advisory, as obtained by FOX 13. Officials determined the incident did not pose a sufficient risk to warrant public concern, maintaining that the traveler was cleared to fly since they were past the infectious period.
As per KSL Newsradio, health officials had been in contact with passengers on the flight, and as of Tuesday afternoon, no cases of measles arising from this exposure have been reported. Measles, a highly contagious disease, is characterized by symptoms that can quickly spread, including fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, with the characteristic rash following two to four days after these initial symptoms.
Commenting on the incident, travelers expressed mixed reactions in interviews captured by KUTV. One traveler, Bart Vance, admitted, "Any disease coming through an airport is kind of scary," while Laura Lane, headed back to Austin, confidently added, "We're vaccinated and use good hand hygiene, so it doesn't scare me." Ginger, another traveler, assured with no apparent concern, "Not worried. I had my [measles shot] a long time ago when we had to have them as children, so I'm good," as detailed by KUTV.
Utah health officials reassert their stance that the risk remains low, citing that the passengers were vaccinated and thereby presented a low risk of spreading the infection. Nevertheless, the incubation period for measles typically ranges from 7 to 21 days, signaling that new cases still could emerge in the days ahead. The situation is followed closely by health officials who have acted to notify everyone who may have come into contact with the infected traveler.
